Harker, Flyers Down JackHammers 6-2

SCHAUMBURG, IL – Brett Harker scattered four hits over seven innings as the Schaumburg Flyers (23-38) captured a 6-2 victory Tuesday night at Alexian Field over the Joliet JackHammers (32-28). Joliet dropped to 1-4 this season against Schaumburg.

The Flyers put up three in the seventh to push the lead to four. Joe Nowicki and Dan Parzyk singled with Nowicki scoring on a single by Tommy Fitzgerald off Ross Stout (5-7). Kyle Dahman came on and struck Brandon Newton, but allowed a two run single to Travis Brown for the 6-2 cushion.

Harker (4-7) provided his second strong start against the JackHammers this season, allowing two runs on four hits with six strikeouts and three walks. Harker was allowed four runs over 15 innings against Joliet in 2010.

The JackHammers did cut the lead to 3-2 in the top of the seventh, loading the bases with nobody out. Chris Colton and Ryan Wehrle singled with Roberto Mena coaxing a walk against Harker. Josh Flores entered as a pinch hitter for Joe Billick and struck out. Jonathan Wyatt lifted a sacrifice to center for the JackHammers second run. Harker would stop the rally by striking out Kevin Rios.

Stout struck out a season high seven hitters, but allowed six runs (five earned) on nine hits in the setback.

Schaumburg took the lead for good off Stout in the second, plating two runs. Parzyk collected an RBI groundout to third and Fitzgerald singled into left center after Josh Burrus and Nowicki started the frame with singles.

Joliet scored first after Wyatt led off the game with a double scored on a Jon Nelson two out single to left. The hit extended Nelson’s hitting streak to 19 games, tying the longest streak this season in the Northern League.

Tom Lyons came on and got the final six outs for Schaumburg, allowing two singles in the process.

Nelson collected a team high two hits and drove in a run. Wyatt went 1-3 with a run batted in and a run scored.

The JackHammers and Flyers will meet in the rubber matchup tomorrow afternoon. Todd Privett (5-4) will go up against Ryan Gehring (3-5). Game time is slated for 4:30 p.m. with a 4:20 p.m. pre-game show on 1340 WJOL.
