Cruse Shuts Down JackHammers in 7-1 Defeat

KANSAS CITY, KS – Andrew Cruse scattered two hits and one run over seven innings as the Joliet JackHammers (27-24) fell Sunday night to the Kansas City T-Bones (34-18) 7-1 at Community America Ballpark. Kansas City took two of three from Joliet and evened up the season series at five games apiece.

The T-Bones jumped on Todd Privett (4-4) early, scoring five runs over the first three frames. Ryan Fox plated two in the first on a bases loaded two out single, dropping a ball into shallow right field for the first two runs.

Jake Blackwood collected his 44th run batted in with a double in the second, scoring Jimmy Mojica who reached on a one out bunt single. Ray Sadler struck in the third with a solo shot and Dwayne White lifted a sacrifice fly for the 5-0 lead, plating Jim Fasano who reached on a Ryan Wehrle fielding error.

Cruse (8-2) did the rest for Kansas City, limiting the JackHammers to one run. Jonathan Wyatt lined a 3-2 pitch in the sixth over the right field wall for the lone Joliet tally and cut the deficit to 7-1. Wyatt would double in the eighth as well for his tenth multi-hit game during his current 13 game hitting streak.

Privett exited after 4.1 innings, allowing seven runs (six earned) on six hits with a season high five walks and two strikeouts. Michael Rocco came out of the bullpen and tossed 2.2 scoreless innings, striking out three while scattering two hits.

The JackHammers did threaten late, loading the bases with two outs in the ninth against Franklin Perez. Jon Nelson and Chris Colton singled with Wehrle walking with two outs to fill the bases. Perez would leave with an injury after throwing the 3-2 pitch behind Wehrle and immediately clutching his right elbow. Erik Hamren came on and retired Roberto Mena on a fly out to left to end the game.

Wyatt led the charge with two hits and the lone run batted in while Nelson, Colton and Brad Correll collected the other JackHammer hits.

The JackHammers return to Silver Cross Field tomorrow night as the Rockford RiverHawks visit downtown Joliet. Rory Shortell (1-4) will take the bump opposite Kyle Wright (4-2). First pitch is set for 6:10 p.m. with a 6:00 p.m. pre-game show on 1340 WJOL.
